ORIGINS: Once America's most popular grape and wine, Catawba faded from memory when Prohibition dimmed the light on this beloved style. Even before Jim and Betty Held reopened Stone Hill, Catawba was the first grape they farmed. Inspired by our family and winery's heritage with this variety, we set out to explore what a Catawba grape could become as a quality-oriented dry wine. After tasting the results of our first experiment, we were very pleasantly surprised, and we now present the bottle before you! Please enjoy a wine once lost to history and destined to be lifted in your glass once again.

HISTORY: The Catawba grape is one of America's oldest native derived vareities, cultivated since at least the early 1820s along the Mid-Altantic and Carolinas. From there, it moved to Ohio and Missouri, where it became the nation's most popular grape and wine. Stone Hill Winery started growing Catawba in 1846, and Catawba quickly cemented itself as one of our most important Pre-Prohibition varieties. While Jim and Betty Held and their families enjoyed Catawba grapes and wines throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, it wasn't until 1959 that Catawba vines were planted again commercially. In 1965, Catawba became one of the three first wines released at the newly established Stone Hill Winery.
