Stone Hill Winery is fortunate to have a tiny 1/4 acre vineyard of Norton grapevines that were planted in 1863, during the Civil War. Once in a great while the shy bearing Ancient Vines produce enough grapes for a barrel or two of Norton Wine. the first sip takes you back to a time when Missouri Norton was King of American dry red wine and named "Best Red Wine of all Nations" at the 1873 Vienna World Exposition. 2013 CROSS J VINEYARD NORTON

VARIETAL INFORMATION: The Norton grape is a true native American grape of the species vitis aestivalis and the official state grape of Missouri. Since the Norton grape evolved under midwestern, continental growing conditions, it is perfectly suited to our long, warm summers and cold winters. In addition, it is blessed with a natural resistance to all types of fungal disease. Our Estate Bottled Norton is produced from 100 percent estate-grown Norton grapes from our Cross J Vineyard. This small vineyard surrounds Jim and Betty Held's home on a stunning hilltop overlooking the Missouri River. Their goal with this vineyard is simple: to produce the finest wine possible. Careful fermentation on the skins is followed by 12 months of aging in European and American oak barrels. In contrast to our regular Estate Bottled Norton, we use a higher percentage of new and European oak in our Cross J Vineyard Norton.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Harvested October 2013; Alcohol - 13.8%

TASTING INFORMATION: This unique single-vineyard Norton comes from our beautiful Cross J Vineyard high above the Missouri River; however, dramatic views of the river below are not all the vineyard produces. The 2013 Cross J Norton displays expressive mocha elements that flow into the still rather beautifully fruit-rich wine. Cherry and cassis pair with the complexity expected of an aged Norton, producing both siky and luscious tannins and delicious notes of cooking spices intermingled with an earthy and welll rounded finish. It's grown on our estate vineyards and harvested late in the season at the peak of ripeness, then aged in small French, Hungarian and American oak barrels. While voluptuous now, it will develop complexity with aging. Ripe supple tannins, intense blackberry flavors and spicy aromas. (750ml)
