VARIETAL INFORMATION: The Norton grape is a true native American grape of the species vitis aestivalis and the official state grape of Missouri. Since the Norton grape evolved under midwestern, continental growing conditions, it is perfectly suited to our long, warm summers and cold winters. In addition, it is blessed with a natural resistance to all types of fungal disease. Our Estate Bottled Norton is produced from 100 percent estate-grown Norton grapes from our Cross J Vineyard. This small vineyard surrounds Jim and Betty Held's home on a stunning hilltop overlooking the Missouri River. Their goal with this vineyard is simple: to produce the finest wine possible. Careful fermentation on the skins is followed by 12 months of aging in European and American oak barrels. In contrast to our regular Estate Bottled Norton, we use a higher percentage of new and European oak in our Cross J Vineyard Norton.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Harvested October 2018; Alcohol - 13.0%

TASTING INFORMATION: Pronounced red fruit, chalk and gravelly earth are expressed by the terroir of this single vineyard estate grown vintage. Hand-picked at optimum physiological ripeness, skin fermented with yeast to extract those important aroma, flavor and structural compounds from the skins. Matured for one year in new Eastern European oak barrels. The palate is well-structured, and the juicy red fruit follow through very well. A touch higher acidity makes for a red wine with good length and that can be enjoyed with big flavors found in ribeye and tomahawk steaks. Drinks excellently now and can benefit with 3-4 more years of maturation to add a little bottle-age complexity. (750 ml)

Positive Rating A Great Red Wine for That Special Occasion

We were introduced to Cross J Norton on a tour of Stone Hill Winery a couple of years ago. The tasting sold us that this is a very special wine that pairs well with those special dinners which call for a great wine. It also serves well as a special treat all by itself. We usually stop by the Winery in the fall every and bring home a bottle or two of Cross J Norton. Nice surprise to find it included in the Wine Club selection this spring. Thanks for the special treat.
